Loading... Adoption of Israel UPR report : a painful delivery
HRT
Juan Gasparini/HRT The report on Israel’s human rights record almost had to be adopted by a vote on Tuesday 9th December, after Egypt demanded a review of a paragraph it considered too favourable to the Jewish State. The text was finally adopted after some verbal amendments were made to the final document. Every country has the right to ask for the report to be changed over the next two weeks. The recommendations were mostly based on the most important points made during the debate on the 4th December : release of Palestinian prisoners, ban on adminstrative detention and targeted assassinations, withdrawal from the 1967 occupied Arab territories, freedom of movement guaranteed in the West Bank and Gaza, abolition of the death penalty. The Israeli delegation asked to be allowed to give its comments on the report at the next Human Rights Council assembly in March 2009, when the report will be officially adopted.
